How we keep the AI coach safe

Last updated: October 29, 2026

Mia and Max are AI characters, not people. They're built on a large language model from Anthropic and give general ideas about dates and relationships. They aren't therapists, doctors or a crisis service. If you're in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.

What will I always see?

What happens when someone may be at risk?

  1. Detection. Every message to the coach is checked on our server, before any AI reply, for signs of suicidal thoughts, self-harm, abuse or immediate danger.
  2. Response. If a message matches, the coach stops coaching. It replies with a short, caring message and these resources:
    • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988
    • Crisis Text Line: text HOME to 741741
    • National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788
    • Emergency: 911
  3. No harmful content. The coach is instructed never to describe methods of self-harm, encourage harm, or present itself as a substitute for professional help. A second check runs on the coach's reply before you see it.
  4. The same on every screen. These rules apply wherever you talk to the coach in the app.
  5. Review. We count (without reading conversations) how often crisis resources are shown, and review the word lists and instructions at least every 3 months, using evidence-based guidance such as 988 Lifeline safe-messaging practices.

Who is the coach for?

CoupleMoment is for adults 18+. If we learn that a user is a minor, we close the account. See our Child Safety Standards.

What happens to what I type?

What you type to the coach is sent to Anthropic only to generate a reply, and is not used to train AI models. Your name and your partner's name are never sent. See our Privacy Policy.
